PSP protest will continue until Sindh govt fulfills demands: Mustafa Kamal

KARACHI: Chairman of Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) and former mayor Karachi Mustafa Kamal, on Sunday, said the party's protest will continue until the basic rights of Karachi residents are restored.

"Our motion is to fight for the basic amenities for the masses," Kamal said while addressing a press conference. "We are not asking the government to fetch stars from the sky, we only demand clean water."

The former mayor, for a period of two months, offered his services gratis, to monitor the process of laying water pipes.

"We demand only two percent of the entire water allocated to Sindh," the PSP chief said. "We have no objections to share water with our Sindhi brothers."

He claimed that the established democracy is a sham if the government is unable to provide clean drinking water to the public. He urged the Sindh government to lay water pipes in addition to constructing roads.

"Even under the worst examples of governance, citizens have not been deprived of their basic rights," the former mayor said. "We will bury the fake grandeur of our rulers."

Kamal stressed that Karachi with its two ports is the economic hub of the country and the entire country benefits from the city. "Karachi earns PKR 12 billion in an hour but no one cares about the city's [shabby] state. The elected representatives are only interested in looting Karachi."

Talking about the K-IV water project, the PSP chief claimed to have created the project. "I had made plans for Karachi for the next fifty years."

He claimed that K-IV project would not cover the acute shortage of water in the city. "The government would have to start implementing phase 2 of the project."

"I appeal to the international organisations working with the Sindh government to review their decisions," Kamal said.

The former mayor claimed that people came out of their houses to support the party's stance in over 20 locations across the country.

On April 8, PSP set up protest camps at 12 different locations in the city.

PSP workers, on April 7, threatened to impede smooth operations of the Sindh government until it would solve issues pertaining to Karachi.

While protesting outside Karachi Press Club,  PSP workers demanded that the provincial government fulfils the basic needs, including the provision of water, electricity, and a proper sewage system.

The party alleged that the Sindh government has taken over the local government department so as to carry out corrupt activities.
