LANDIKOTAL: At least five people were killed when an improvised explosive device went off in Aka Khel area of Tirah Valley in Khyber Agency on Monday, according to security sources.

The security officials said the blast occurred close to the vehicle of a peace (aman) committee. Each tribe in the area has a separate peace committee.

The number of injured people, if any, has not been ascertained yet. But the vehicle was destroyed.

Members of the peace committee were among the deceased.

The incident has been condemned by Pakistan Peoples Party Co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari. "The enemies of peace will be dealt with an iron fist," a statement quoted him as saying.

Aka Khel is a far-off area with barely any communication facilities. Even the roads are not paved enough for convenient transportation.
