ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s younger son, Hassan Nawaz, reached the secretariat of the Panama case Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on Thursday morning to record his statement.

Strict security arrangements are in place at the JIT Secretariat, which is housed at the Federal Judicial Academy in the capital.

Hassan was accompanied by the prime minister's special secretary Asif Kirmani.

Speaking to the media after Hassan went inside, Kirmani, accompanied by state minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, lamented the treatment being meted out to the prime minister’s family.

He urged the Supreme Court to take notice of the leaking of Hussain Nawaz’s picture, as well as the ‘ambulance scandal’ — the mysterious calling of an ambulance on the first day of Hussain’s appearance before the JIT. He alleged that the ambulance was called in unnecessarily in a character assassination attempt against the premier’s elder son, adding that the entire time Hussain was inside, his family was worried sick.

Hassan — a London-based businessman — earlier appeared before the JIT on June 2 and was questioned by the probe team for around seven hours.

He did not speak to the media after his questioning.

Meanwhile, the premier’s elder son, Hussain, is expected to appear before the JIT on Friday. This will be his fifth summoning by the JIT, which is investigating the prime minister’s family’s global financial dealings in light of the Supreme Court’s April 20 judgment in the Panama Papers case.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court special bench overseeing the JIT’s probe had expressed satisfaction with the progress of the investigation after the JIT submitted its mid-term report.

The JIT, formed on May 6, has 60 days to complete its probe and submit its final report to the Supreme Court.
