Eyes on the goal: Shandur Polo Festival enters second day

Three matches will be played between Chitral, GB teams today

Ghizer: The calendar event, Shandur Polo Festival, entered its second day on Sunday, with players from Laspur team of Chitral and Ghizer team of Gilgit Baltistan ready on horse backs for the three matches scheduled for the day.

A large number of spectators were present in what is said to be the world’s highest polo ground. Camps have been arranged in Shandur for the stay of spectators and players.

The three-day festival that kicked off on Saturday had two matches played on the first day. In the first match, the Laspur team defeated their Ghizer opponent, with 8-2 goals, while tables were turned in the second match, with Ghizer claiming the victory.

A music show of GB and Chitral’s traditional music has also been arranged for the festival, while other activities were also under way.

tight security measures have been taken to ensure the safety of spectators and players. Besides Pakistan Army, GB and Chitral police personnel and Chitral Scouts members have also been deployed for security.

All hotels in Chitral city are said to be brimming with tourists who have come from different parts of the country to enjoy the festival.

The polo festival in Shandur is played every year since decades. People from Chitral and GB areas passionate about the match as Indians and Pakistanis for cricket tournaments between the teams of their respective countries.
