LAHORE: The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has constituted the party's central election commission for electing its new president, according to a notification it issued Wednesday.

Sardar Mohammad Yaqoob Khan Nasar, the acting PML-N president, notified formation of the electoral body, with Chaudhry Mohammad Jaffer Iqbal as its chairman.

The other four members of the commission include Babu Sarfraz Jatoi, Ali Afzal Jadoon, Najma Hameed and Ameer Afzal Mandokhel.

Following disqualification of Nawaz Sharif as the prime minister, the Election Commission of Pakistan had on August 8 directed the ruling party to appoint a new president.

The ECP had informed that according to the Political Parties Order 2002, a disqualified MNA could not hold any position in the party. It said the party needed to appoint a new president and then inform the ECP of the same.

The PML-N had then appointed Senator Sardar Mohammad Yaqoob Khan Nasar as its interim president on August 17. He was chosen by former premier Nawaz Sharif as the interim party president.

Later, the party's central working committee met in Islamabad and gave formal approval of his appointment.
