ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani on Wednesday expressed serious concerns over news reports that Karachi University will start sharing student records to intelligence agencies in the wake of recent militancy in the city being traced to university graduates.

In a letter written to the university, Rabbani said that he is “abhorred” by the news and that the students will be required to produce a character certificate from the local police station for admission in the Karachi University.

“These two institutions [police and agencies] are the hard face of the state, an interaction with them will further consolidate the anxiety and fear in the minds of the students,” the letter reads.

However, the varsity in a press release late Tuesday clarified that “reports that the records of KU students are being checked and that new students would be asked to get clearance certificate from police are completely false. No such decision has been taken yet”.

Geo News on Tuesday reported citing sources that details of Karachi University students suspected of being involved in suspicious activity will be shared with intelligence agencies.

The university’s Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Ajmal Khan decided in a meeting that the varsity will coordinate and take assistance from law enforcing agencies for the security of students and will take every possible measure to ensure the same after one of its pupils was reportedly found affiliated with a terrorist group.

The spokesman added that the news was baseless and contrary to the facts and any such decision has not been taken yet.

Police are searching for Sarosh Siddiqui, the suspected mastermind of the Eid-day attack on Khawaja Izharul Hassan, the opposition leader in the Sindh Assembly.

Police said Siddiqui, who escaped a police raid on Monday, is a student of Karachi University and a commander of terrorist group Ansarul Shariah.
