Malicious WhatsApp clone downloaded a million times before getting reported

Over a million Android users fell prey to an imposter WhatsApp app on the Google Play Store.

The WhatsApp clone named "Update WhatsApp Messenger" and developed by "WhatsApp Inc.," looked pretty much identical to the real one, reported Mashable.

Soon after the app was flagged by a Reddit user, its name was changed and it was later deleted altogether.

The fake app had many ads and a code to download a second piece of software to the users' devices, according to some Reddit users.

It is a point of concern that the developers of the malicious app managed to sneak through Google Play without being noticed.
