Iconic Urdu poet, writer Fahmida Riaz passes away

Famed Urdu poet and literary personality Fahmida Riaz passed away on Wednesday night in Lahore.

Known for her feminist and progressive writings, Riaz was born in Indian city of Meerut in July 28, 1945.

She penned her first poem during her student days and shot to fame after publication of several poetry collections.

Riaz was known for her feminist and unconventional views on social taboos and struggled for women empowerment and democracy.

She also served as the head of National Book Foundation, Islamabad.

She left Pakistan for India during the rule of former military ruler General Zia-ul-Haq and returned only after his death.

Godaavari, Badan Dareeda and Khana e Aab O Gila are some of her famous works.
