ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday said he never misused his powers or did corruption.

Speaking to the media inside the courtroom after he was sentenced to seven years in prison in Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference and was acquitted in the Flagship Investment reference, Nawaz said, “I never misused my powers.”

“My conscience is clear as I never did corruption,” he added. “All praise to Almighty, that I never did any corruption,” the former premier said.

Earlier today, an accountability court sentenced Nawaz to seven years in prison in Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference, while acquitting him in the Flagship Investment reference.

In a short verdict announced today, the court said there was concrete evidence against the former premier in the Al-Azizia reference, and that he was unable to provide a money trail in the case.

There was not enough evidence to convict Nawaz in the Flagship reference, thus he has been acquitted, the decision read.

Nawaz was taken into custody from the court premises following the verdict.

The former premier requested that he be shifted to Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore instead of Adiala Jail, which was granted by the court.

Accountability Court II Judge Arshad Malik announced the verdict in the corruption references against the Sharif family, after reserving the decision last week.
