Wahab Riaz targeting World Cup squad with PSL performance

DUBAI: Peshawar Zalmi fast bowler Wahab Riaz has said that he is eyeing a place in the Pakistan World Cup squad through his performance in the fourth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). 

One of the most successful bowlers of PSL, Riaz has 48 wickets to his name. The fast bowler said he still has the hunger and passion to play for the national team and is hoping his performance in the tournament will give him an edge and hopefully and place in the squad.

“PSL is a good opportunity before the World Cup. I have been bowling well in the leagues and I hope through my performance in the tournament I can become a part of the national squad,’ Riaz said while speaking to Geo.

The 33-year-old Zalmi bowler added, “Sure we play a lot of leagues and tournaments but there is nothing that comes close to playing for your country.” 

When asked about his goals for this year’s tournament, Riaz said reaching the final is at the top of his list. “As a bowler, I have a responsibility and I want to make sure we reach the final again this time like last year.”

Moreover, the fast bowler said he is looking forward to bowling to Lahore Qalandars' latest signing South African star and former captain AB de Villiers. “AB is one of the most destructive batsmen of the modern era and he is one of my favourite batsmen. I am looking forward to bowling to him.”

“You can expect a to see a healthy competition on match-day,” he added.

Responding to a question about the eight matches in Pakistan, Riaz said he is looking forward to them. “I want to congratulate the Pakistan Cricket Board for scheduling the matches in Pakistan. It is an excellent initiative which will help with the revival of international cricket in the country."
