NEW DELHI: With Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on course for victory in the Indian general election, plenty of celebrities from the entertainment industry are also vying their luck in the world's largest democracy.

Official data from India’s Election Commission showed Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead in close to 300 of the 542 seats available, with more than the 272 seats needed for a majority in the lower house of parliament.

That would give it the first back-to-back majority for a single party since 1984. The main opposition Congress Party was ahead in 50 seats, figures showed.

According to unofficial results, Indian film actor Urmila Matondkar who is contesting on a Congress ticket from Mumbai North is trailing behind BJP's sitting lawmaker Gopal Shetty.

Former Indian television star and BJP candidate Smriti Irani defeated Congress President Rahul Gandhi in a tough battle from the hotly contested Uttar Pradesh constituency Amethi.

Gandhi, who had been winning from Amethi since 2004, conceded defeat and congratulated the Irani for her victory.

"I want Smriti Irani ji to keep people's faith and take care of Amethi with love," NDTV quoted Gandhi as saying.
