Former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya has not died and is very much alive.

News stories carrying fake claims seem to be becoming more and more frequent as can be observed from a report saying Jayasuriya "sadly dies in hospital".

Published Sunday by CBTVN, which does not provide any information about itself on its website, the report was titled: "Man knocked down by vehicle in Toronto identified as former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya."

The fake news report claimed that Jayasuriya had passed away in the hospital after being hit by a car during a visit to Canada recently.

"The Sri Lankan Embassy in Canada has confirmed the identity of the 49 year old and said they were aware of his visit to Toronto, Canada," the fake news report added.

The fake news went viral after Indian cricket bowler Ravichandran Ashwin tweeted about it, asking followers to confirm if it was true.

Ashwin wrote: "Is the news on Sanath Jayasuriya true?? I got a news update on what's app but see nothing here on Twitter!!
