ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has given the go-ahead to appoint National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Deputy Chairperson Hussain Asghar as the chairperson of a 'commission of inquiry', Mirza Shehzad Akbar, the PM's special assistant on accountability, confirmed Tuesday.

Asghar will be mandated to include his choice of members in the high power commission constituted by Prime Minister Imran Khan to investigate the massive rise in foreign debts in 10 years.

Akbar said that the notification for Asghar will be released by tomorrow (Wednesday). "No mega project or dam was built from foreign loans. The commission will investigate whether the loans were utilised as according to the requirement and need," he added.

The cabinet member said that the commission which includes officials of IB, FIA, ISI, SECP will present its report within six months time, and it will work under an act of parliament.

Asghar, earlier, has also served as a director of anti-corruption establishment Punjab and the Federal Investigation Agency.

In his post-federal budget speech, Prime Minister Imran Khan put the blame for economic woes of the country on former governments of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The prime minister said the two political parties entered into an alliance and kept bringing a chairperson of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of their own choice.
