PM Imran Khan, US President Trump to meet on July 22 in Washington

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan is slated to meet US President Donald Trump on July 22 during his trip to Washington, the Foreign Office said on Thursday.

"At the invitation of US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Imran Khan will visit Washington and hold a meeting with President Trump on 22 nd July 2019," Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal said in his weekly briefing.

He said the agenda of the meeting between the two leaders was being developed through diplomatic channels, and that the focus would be to "refresh the bilateral relationship".

Separately, with regard to internal and neighbourly relations, the spokesperson said Pakistan has a crucial role in the continuous progress of the Afghan peace process.

Dr Faisal further commented that they were moving in a positive direction with regard to the Kartarpur Corridor's inauguration.

The occupying Indian Army martyred 40 innocent civilians in Indian-occupied Kashmir (IoK), the spokesperson added, noting that they were concerned about the Hurriyet leaders' arrests and worsening health.

Earlier, on June 29, sources had revealed that PM Imran Khan was likely to meet Trump during a five-day visit to the US in July.

Sources had further mentioned that Khan would be accompanied by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and other leaders during his visit to the US on July 20.

PM Imran Khan and Trump are expected to discuss bilateral relations, regional issues, and the Afghan peace process.

Later this year, in September, Khan is scheduled to travel to New York to represent Pakistan at the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Khan would address the 74th UNGA session for the first time since he assumed office in August 2018.
