TV anchor among four killed in Karachi firing incidents

KARACHI: Two people, including a television anchor, were killed in a firing incident at a local café in the upscale Defence area on Tuesday, police said.

Mureed Abbas, a news anchor affiliated with a private news channel, was killed along with his friend Khizar at a cafe on Khyaban-e-Bukhari commercial area. Police said that an assailant identified as Atif Zaman opened fire at the journalist from a white-colored car.

Hospital authorities said that Abbas received bullets on his chest and abdomen. 

SSP South Sheraz Nazir said that the investigators are probing the element of personal enmity as the deceased journalist, earlier, filed a police complaint against few individuals.  

Abbas died on the spot after being shot while Khizar succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a nearby hospital. The SSP said that the alleged killer Zaman, later, shot himself at his flat after gunning down Abbas and Khizar.

The police official said that Zaman and Abbas were engaged in a business dispute. The deceased's wife, who is also a tv anchor, said that her husband invested Rs5 million in Zaman's tyre business and was lately asking him to return his funds. 

In another firing incident, as many as two people were killed and one injured in the Pehalwan Goth area of the city.
