KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has launch a probe against K-Electric to determine if the power distribution company violated any laws causing fatal accidents or prolonged power outages during recent monsoon rains in Karachi.

In a press release issued on Saturday, the regulatory body said several fatal and accidents occurred due to electrocution in Karachi during the recent monsoon rains that have caused havoc due to flooding and water accumulation. Prolonged power outages were also experienced during the rainy season in large parts of the city.

"These prima facie facts indicate possible violations of NEPRA-administered laws, codes, standards and other applicable documents by K-Electric," it said.

NEPRA said a formal investigation was being launched against K-Electric under section 27A of the Regulation of Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Electric Power Act, 1997 to "ascertain the underlying facts leading to the fatal and non-fatal accidents and to determine whether any violation or non-compliance of law and applicable documents has been committed by K-Electric, which caused loss of life and suspension of power supply to consumers".

It said that senior officers were being appointed as investigating officers who would conclude their probe in a timeframe of 15 days.
