Vehari police officers arrested after torturing woman till she passed out

KARACHI/LAHORE: Police officers in Vehari were arrested on Sunday for torturing a woman till she passed out, Geo News reported, in what becomes the latest case of Punjab police brutality, reports of punishment and alleged torture cells, and abusing detainees and old people.

According to reports, Vehari police officers left the woman outside her residence after allegedly torturing her in a private torture cell and fled. Later, in a statement, the victim said she was arrested over the charge of stealing gold but was brutally tortured during the questioning.

The inspector-general of police (IG) for Punjab, Arif Nawaz Khan, took notice of the incident and said the accused have been arrested. Among the eight detained police officers are DSP, SHO, Incharge CIA, and Mohrar

Authorities became involved when Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar took notice of the incident and the regional police officer (RPO) in Multan went to meet the victim and her family.

The RPO had assured the family that they would get justice.

Separately, initial investigation revealed that the woman accused of stealing gold was innocent while the police officers who tortured her were guilty.

No place for black sheep in police

A statement from Punjab police said a first information report (FIR) was registered against 13 suspects, including two sons of landowners and other police officers.

In his statement, the IGP Punjab directed that other absconding suspects be arrested immediately. Police officers who set up private lock-ups and torture cells — the "black sheep" — have no place in police.
