LAHORE: A sessions court on Thursday adjourned the hearing of a defamation suit filed by actor and singer Ali Zafar against Meesha Shafi until Sept 20.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Amjad Ali Shah conducted the proceedings wherein Ali Zafar was cross-examined.

The actor-cum-singer stated that all allegations levelled against him were baseless as he had never harassed Meesha, in response to questions put by the defence counsel. He submitted that the allegations were levelled for monetary benefits and gaining popularity.

The court expressed serious annoyance over interference by Ali Zafar's counsel in the proceedings.

Meanwhile, the court also conducted proceedings on a Rs 2 billion damages suit filed by Meesha Shafi against Ali Zafar for making false allegations against her on the media.

Last year, Zafar had filed a Rs1-billion defamation suit against Meesha after she accused him of sexually harassing her on more than one occasion. The case has had multiple hearings over the past year.

Interestingly, however, Meesha Shafi in June had challenged Punjab governor in the Lahore High Court (LHC) for rejecting her review appeal of the orders of the provincial ombudsperson, who had earlier set aside her case, saying she was never an employee of the alleged harasser.

Additional Sessions Judge Justice Amjad Ali Shah of the Lahore Sessions Court presided over the latest hearing, where the singer was present with two of his lawyers, Ali Sibtain Fazli and Hisham Ahmed Khan.

Saqib Jilani and Dad represented Meesha Shafi during today's hearing. The case was adjourned, with the next hearing scheduled for September 20.
