KARACHI: One of the suspects in the murder of a third-year medical student during a mugging incident last week has been arrested, police claimed on Wednesday.

According to the senior superintendent of police (SSP) for District East, Ghulam Azfar Mahaesar, the arrested suspect — Muhammad Nabi Afghani — carried out the mugging with his accomplice, Qari Basheer Afghani.

Addressing a press conference, the SSP said the "Afghani garbage-pickers' gang" was involved in the mugging of 24-year-old student Misbah, who was with her father at the time of the incident, in Karachi's Gulshan-e-Iqbal locality.

The suspects had snatched a mobile phone from late Misbah's father before killing her. Police said they had recovered the motorcycle and the weapons used in the mugging.

The SSP noted that Qari Basheer Afghani was absconding but that raids were being carried out to search for and arrest him.

The gang started their work as garbage pickers first then expanded into dacoities, he added.

Separately, police claimed they had arrested during an operation another suspect reportedly involved in the murder of at least 111 people. They said the suspect was identified as a target killer associated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-London (MQM-L).

The SSP said the suspect was an employee at a government hospital and was also involved in the May 12 tragedy.
