NEW DELHI: In bid to counter global outcry, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now looking towards Indian film industry to bolster his world image.

On Saturday, Modi hosted a gathering where he discussed ways to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary.

The Indian PM received applause from none other than Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan for launching the initiative to popularise his ideals.

The event was attended by several big names of the Indian film and entertainment industry including Rajkumar Hirani, Kangana Ranaut, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anand L Rai, SP Balasubrahmanyam, Sonam Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Sonu Nigam, Ekta Kapoor and members of the Tarak Mehta group, ETV group.

"Gandhi is synonymous with simplicity. His thoughts reverberate far and wide," Modi was quoted as saying on the occasion.

In response, Aamir Khan praised him for the initiative and assured that the industry will do "even more".

"First and foremost, I want to appreciate PM for thinking about this effort [further popularising the ideals of Bapu]. As creative people, there is much we can do. And, I assure the PM that we will do even more," Aamir Khan said.

Shahrukh Khan said, "I would like to thank PM Narendra Modi for bringing us all together, that too for a cause such as this [Mahatma Gandhi]. I feel we need to re-introduce Gandhi ji to India and the world."

Both Shahrukh and Aamir enjoy global following and are recoginsed and watched across all the globe including China. Their support for Modi is seen as a damage control move by the ruling party.
