ISLAMABAD: The Islami Jamiat-e-Talba (IJT) on Friday organised a protest in Islamabad against the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) rights support function held at the US Embassy in Islamabad last week. They also condemned government silence over the issue.
A large number of IJT activists the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami gathered at Abpara Chowk. A heavy contingent of police and anti-terrorists squad was deployed to avert any untoward incident. They also burnt a US flag and shouted "we are ready for jihad against the US".
Protest turned violent when IJT activists tried to break barricades to march towards US embassy. Police baton charged the protesters and also fired tear gas to disperse the angry protesters. IJT activists also pelted stones at police contingent and scuffles with some police personals due to which several IJT activists and policemen were injured.
The Abpara chowk was presenting a look of battlefield and fight remained for at least half an hour.
Police after hectic efforts succeeded to disperse protesters who later blocked 7th avenue for general traffic.
IJT members were carrying placards and chanting slogans against the US. Protesters said that after its political and military interference in the region, the US is now trying to draw social differences in the country. JIT vowed to continue their protests unless government does not seek public apology from US ambassador Cameron Munter.
They said that the "gay rights protecting party" held at the US Consulate is against Islamic and moral values. Protesters said that after the Hadood Ordinance, useless matters were promoted by the US, which shows its intentions. They said that the US wants to create social misbalance in society, which will not be allowed.
Bilal Ahmad one of the protest said "It is a cultural terrorism on us. They want to make Muslims immoral like themselves." He said it is an assault on our Islamic culture and must be condemned by all means.
Mohammad Usman an IJT activist was severely injured during the protest criticized ICT administration for police baton charge. He said their protest was peaceful but perhaps government was not in favour of anti-US protests, he alleged.
"We will continue our protests demonstrations unless; government does not take notice of anti-Islamic activities being held at US embassy", Usman told PPI.
