SC grants bail to woman who killed daughter over 'honour', says no proof except confession

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to a woman who had allegedly killed her daughter over the so-called 'honour', saying there was no proof except a confession statement from the accused.

The apex court, in a hearing presided by Justice Manzoor Ahmad Malik, accepted the bail petition against a Rs100,000 bond, which was to be submitted later, and underscored that the police had no evidence of the crime apart from the woman's confession statement.

During the hearing, the court appointed attorney told the bench that the accused had confessed to killing her daughter over honour. The lawyer added that the woman claimed her daughter was involved in suspicious activities and that the girl had illicit relations with a man, which is why she murdered her.

The remarks were made by a three-member bench headed by Justice Malik, who added that a mere confession statement was not enough in the eyes of the law.

The accused hails from Gujrat, Punjab.
