LAHORE: The electricity shortfall in the country has reached 5,166 MW causing loadshedding of 10-16 hours in several cities, Geo News reported.
According to Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco)spokesman, electricity generation is 12,936 MW while the demand stands at 18,102 MW. He said that Karachi was being supplied 700 MW.
In order to deal with the shortfall, cities of Punjab are experiencing 10 hours while rural areas are experiencing 14 hours of loadshedding. This has increased the problems being faced by residents. In Multan residents protested against the increased hours of loadshedding in the city and burnt tires in front of the MEPCO office.
The situation in Khyber Pakhthunkwa is similar. In cities and rural areas residents are facing up to 16 hours of loadhsedding. In Balochistan, 15-16 hours of loadshedding has become the norm and residents and businesses are facing numerous problems due to this. Interior Sindh is also plagued by the same problem and 10-12 hours of loadshedding in taking place which has severely impacted business activities.
