What dominated Twitter in 2019?

Social networking site Twitter has announced its top trends for 2019, publishing lists of key events, sports teams, celebrities and more which dominated conversation on the platform.

The most retweeted tweet worldwide in 2019 was K-Pop sensation BTS band member Jungkook’s Bad Guy dance video. Initially, this was second on the list behind World Record Egg, but it took the BTS army an hour to leapfrog it to the top spot.

‘Game of Thrones’ was the most talked-about TV show as it sparked immense debate online in its final season. 

Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ was the second most discussed show on Twitter, followed by ‘The Simpsons’ which entered its 31st season this year.

Among the most discussed movies, ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the top-grossing film of 2019, took the top spot. 

‘Joker’, despite its October 2019 release, was third on the list largely due to the performance of Joaquin Phoenix.

The top actors list was dominated by stars from the Marvel cinematic universe with six spots in the top ten. Tom Holland who plays Spider-Man was the most discussed actor with his co-star Zendaya the top female on the list.

Along with the most retweeted tweet, BTS topped the list of musicians worldwide. The K-Pop band, which has over 23 million followers on Twitter, broke through globally in 2019 with their first US tour. 

Ariana Grande came in second, followed by hip-hop artist Drake.

The top three spots for male athletes all went to footballers, but surprisingly Neymar beat out Messi and Ronaldo to the top spot. 

US soccer star Megan Rapinoe, who won the World Cup this year and advocated for equal pay, was the most discussed female athlete on Twitter.

On the political front, US President Donald Trump who is no stranger to Twitter took the top spot, followed by his predecessor Barack Obama.

The massive fire in April at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was the top news-related hashtag, while the most talked about sports event was the UEFA Champions League.

Rounding off the lists were the top emojis for 2019.
