Leading economist Akbar Zaidi appointed IBA executive director

KARACHI: Leading Pakistani political economist Dr Syed Akbar Zaidi has been appointed the Executive Director at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi, the Sindh government announced on Monday.

According to a notification by the Sindh Department of Universities and Boards, Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah has appointed Dr Zaidi for a period of four years on the terms and conditions under the Sindh Universities and Institutes Laws (Amendment) Act 2018.

Dr Zaidi is a veteran researcher, academic and political economist. 

He did his PHD and MPhil in History and Economics from University of Cambridge, and holds an MSc in Social Planning in Developing Countries from the London School of Economics and a B.Sc. degree in Economics, from the University College London.

The renowned economist has a teaching and research background spanning over 29 years, during which he published several academic papers and books.

Zaidi had been previously teaching as adjunct faculty at the IBA in Karachi as well as a visiting professor at the Columbia University in New York.

His publications include The Dismal State of the Social Sciences in Pakistan, The Political Economy of Decentralisation in Pakistan, The Political Economy of Health Care in Pakistan, as well as Issues in Pakistan's Economy which is considered the main textbook for post-graduate courses on South Asia's development, economic history and political economy.
