SC orders decision on merit in Sarfraz Shah killing case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the trial Court in Karachi to expeditiously decide Sarfraz Shah killing case on merit.

A three-Judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on a suo motu case related to killing incident of Sarfaraz Shah by the Rangers also directed that hearing should be conducted in transparent manner.

The Bench said that compliance report should be submitted within two weeks.

During proceedings, Muhammad Mazhar Chaudhry, Deputy AttorneyGeneral of Pakistan, requested for time as the Anti Terrorism Courtin Karachi had yet to complete the trial.

He said that a month's time might be granted for submission of report.

However, the Chief Justice, disagreeing with his request, observed that it would not be possible as it tantamount to injustice.

The Supreme Court in its earlier detailed decision over the issue had observed that Sarfaraz Shah's killing at the hand of Rangers personnel was a barbaric act.

It had also ordered the transfer of Sindh Director General(DG) Rangers and the Inspector General of Police Sindh over incident and subsequently both were removed from their offices by the relevant authorities.

On June 9, Sarfaraz Shah was shot by Rangers in Benazir Parkand the video clips of the incidents were broadcast live on television channels prompting the apex Court to take suo motu notice.
