PESHAWAR: Peshawar’s Sunehri Mosque opened its doors after nearly two decades for women earlier this week after a substantial improvement in the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa, reported The News.

Women worshipers can now offer Friday and Eid prayers at the historic 1,800 square feet mosque situated in Peshawar's cantonment area. Women worshipers were banned from entering the mosque when the law and order situation was very precarious in the city.

According to Maulana Mohammad Ismail, the naib khateeb of Sunehri Masjid, Islam says women can offer congregational prayers at the mosque.

The foundation stone of Sunehri Masjid was laid in 1946 while its construction was complete in 1992. The mosque can accommodate about 6,000 worshippers at a time.

The authorities have reportedly put up a banner outside the mosque carrying a message that “women are now welcome to offer Friday prayer at Sunheri Masjid”.
