KARACHI: A top official of the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KW&SB) has written to the Sindh Inspector-General of Police, claiming that the "tanker mafia" was supplying unhealthy water to the citizens, a spokesperson for the organisation said Monday.
According to the spokesperson, KW&SB Managing Director Asad Ullah Khan has penned and sent a letter to Sindh IGP Mushtaq Ahmed Mehar, informing him that the "tanker mafia" was distributing water hazardous to health around the metropolis, especially in areas where there was a shortage.
Water was brought from Sakran, in Balochistan's Hub, and Gharo, in Sindh's Thatta, to be sold in Karachi, the country's financial and economic hub, the top official wrote.
The tanker mafia, the spokesperson added, was filling up unhealthy underground water, extracted from ponds and various other water bodies, to sell them to those living in Karachi. The tankers were under the jurisdiction of the Manghopir, Mochko, Maymar, and Gharo police stations, they added.
Tankers filled with unhealthy and toxic water were being sold on the city's roads, Khan added in his letter, warning that distribution of such water was adding to the number of diseases in the port city.
