Moot on importance of judiciary
ISLAMABAD: Legal experts here on Wednesday highlighted the importance of independent judiciary for achieving sustainable progress and prosperity besides protecting fundamental rights of public and strengthening democratic system in the country.

They stressed the need to create awareness among the masses about their rights and raising voice against wrongdoings, no matter whosoever commits.

They said had the people voiced against dictatorship and martial laws in past, the country would have not been in the present situation.

"Otherwise, we would have more strong and vibrant institutions," they added while addressing a seminar.

The seminar titled "Future of Independence of Judiciary" was organized by 'Jeevay Pakistan Jeevay Muqami Hakumat' (JPJM) - a body working for restoration of the local government system in the
country.

Justice (r) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim said it is a collective responsibility to work for independence of judiciary and protect the Constitution. "When law ends, anarchy begins," he remarked.

He said following the Constitution in letter and spirit would ensure more effective coordination of provinces, federation and all state institutions.

Fakhruddin said Zia-ul-Haq toppled the elected government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and "corrupted the judiciary" to prolong his unconstitutional rule but "we remained silent" and now we are paying its price.

He stressed the public not to stay unconcerned, give their opinion on right and wrong.

Former President of Lahore High Court Bar Association Syed Zulfikar Abbas Naqvi said every citizen is wishing to see an independent judiciary, considering it a guarantee for progress, prosperity and peace in the country.

He said lawyers, civil society, and political parties play their role in restoration of the judiciary, which was deposed by former president Pervaiz Musharraf.

President of Pakistan Bar Council Abdul Latif Afridi, prominent lawyer Athar Minallah and Chairman of JPJM Daniyal Aziz also spoke on the occasion and highlighted different aspects of independence of judiciary. (APP)
