Sugar price soar to new peak in different cities, PBS data shows

Sugar remained in the limelight on the Karachi commodity markets during the outgoing week. The prices soared to a new peak of Rs120 per in Karachi — highest during the three-tenure of PTI.

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the sweetener is being sold at 120 per kg in different cities of Pakistan — including Karachi and Hyderabad.

Consumers are forced to buy expensive sugar compared to the retail price set by the government.

On September 21, the government had fixed the retail price of sugar at Rs89.75 per kg which will remain in place till November 15, however, the sweetener is being sold at Rs120 per kg in the open market in several cities.

According to the bureau, sugar is being sold within a range of Rs90 to Rs120 per kg in different parts of the country.

In Karachi, Quetta, Khuzdar, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana and Gujranwala, sugar is available for up to Rs120 per kg, while in Peshawar and Bannu the price of sugar is up to Rs118 per kg. In Faisalabad, the sweetener is available at Rs115 per kg and in Islamabad, the price is Rs110 per kg.

In Lahore, Sialkot and Rawalpindi, sugar is being sold at Rs90 per kg, while in Multan, Bahawalpur, and Sargodha, the price of sugar is also around Rs90 per kg.

Meanwhile, as of October 28, sugar was available at Rs85 per kg in utility stores.
