Hundreds of unregistered vehicles impounded
RAWALPINDI: City Traffic Police (CTP) have impounded over 890 vehicles and motorcycles under its campaign launched against unregistered vehicles and those who did not have proper number plates.

City Traffic Officer (CTO) Ghulam Abbas Tarar said that CTP have issued 8400 challan slips and fined the violators during first five days of the special campaign.

He informed that the campaign was launched on March 1 under which action is being taken against unregistered vehicles and motorcycles and those moving on city roads without proper number plates.

He said that earlier a grace period was also given to the motorists specially those who did not have registration or proper number plates. Now they are being fined and their vehicles are also being impounded.

He informed that special squads consisting of an inspector, four traffic wardens are in the field in all the three sectors of Rawalpindi city under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) of the circle. These squads are checking the vehicles and motorcycles, which are without number plates, unregistered or number plates are not according to approved size and shape.

The vehicles are being impounded under section 550 in the respective police stations if the driver could not provide the ownership certificate of the vehicle. Likewise, challan tickets are being issued to the violators of the law.

All sector and beat incharges and traffic wardens deployed on point duties were directed to take special steps to make the campaign a success so that no one could violate the rules in future.

CTO said that special directives were issued that no one should be given any relaxation.

Ghulam Abbas Tarar told that he himself is supervising the campaign and strict action is being taken against the violators.

He said that all out efforts are being made for the rule of law and CTP on traffic rules violations issued over 7.7 million challan tickets in 2011 with over Rs 150 million fines. (APP)
