Tourists killed after cable cars collide, 15 trapped mid-air

• Three people declared dead as cable cars crash into each other.
• Apparently, the incident occurs due to technical problem.
• Trikut ropeway is India's highest vertical ropeway and 766-metres-long.

Three people were declared dead after some cable cars crashed into each other at Trikut hills in India, Zee News reported.

Several people have sustained injuries after this accident on Sunday and are undergoing treatment.

The number of rescued people is now around 32, while 15 are still trapped mid-air on the ropeway.

Among the deceased, two were tourists from Bihar.

Two Mi-17 helicopters were used in the rescue operations, the Indian Air Force (IAF) reported. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) assisted as well. 

Prima facie, the incident occurred due to a technical problem, resulting in the slipping and collision of cable cars. The exact cause, however, is yet to be ascertained.

According to Jharkhand Tourism, the Trikut ropeway is India's highest vertical ropeway. It is about 766-metres-long and the hill is 392-metres-high.

There are 25 cable cars in the ropeway and each can accommodate four people.
