Eid 2022: Will SBP issue fresh currency notes this year?

KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has not yet revealed when will it issue new currency notes to the citizens ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The central bank has been issuing fresh currency notes during Ramadan ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr but the policy has not been announced for the current season, leaving the people guessing.

Well-placed sources in the SBP said that the policy in this regard will be finalised after the 15th of Ramadan.

However, the SBP has started issuing new currency notes to its employees and pensioners. In the years 2020 and 2021, due to COVID-related restrictions, fresh currency notes were not issued directly to the citizens by the central bank.

Over the past two years, the SBP had provided new banknotes to commercial banks which were then issued to the citizens. However, after the lifting of the COVID-19 restriction, the public is waiting for an announcement in this regard.
