One killed, three injured after private hotel's roof collapses: rescue sources

KARACHI: One person was killed while three others sustained injuries after the roof of a five-star hotel collapsed in Karachi late Thursday.

According to rescue sources, several other people were left stuck under the rubble after the roof came down. 

The hotel is situated near Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC). Meanwhile, the deceased person has been identified as Raees Ahmed. 

According to the spokesperson of Jinnah Hospital Dr Ajmal Yousufzai, one dead body and three injured people were brought to the hospital.

“Those who sustained injuries are being treated, while the condition of one person is critical,” he added.

Regarding the accident, the hotel administration said an old part of the hotel’s roof had collapsed, after which the hotel staff started rescue work immediately.

“Precautionary measures have been taken after the incident and further investigations are underway."

Meanwhile, the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Karachi South denied the involvement of any terrorist activity.

“It seems a false ceiling collapsed due to leakage of water pipes, however, no evidence of terrorism has been found,” he added.

According to the Sindh Rangers spokesperson, Rangers personnel have reached the spot and are partaking in the rescue operations.
