KARACHI: As many as 631 encounters took place during which police killed 54 dacoits in Karachi during the period from January 01 to July 19, 2012. The police claimed busting 483 gangs of dacoits and arresting 5132 criminals including 945 absconders and 104 proclaimed offenders during this period.
These figures were mentioned in a report about the performance of police of all the five districts, specialized units - SIU, ACLC and AVCC presented to the Inspector General Police of Sindh Fayyaz Ahmed Leghari.
The 131 encounters took place in District South, 144 in East, 70 in West, 121 in Central and 122 in Malir while 12 dacoits were killed in South, 8 in East, 7 in West, 18 in Central and 9 in Malir.
The police also recovered 49 SMG, 5 shot guns, 65 rifles, 93 repeaters, 3541 pistols, 85 revolvers, 7 carbines, 24 mousers, 2 RPG, 171 hand grenades, 61 mortars, 129 daggers and 960 mobile phones from the arrested criminals, a release said on Sunday that didn't contain the number of crimes including kidnappings for ransom, abductions, robberies, murders, petrol pump robberies, car/bike snatching/theft, street crimes and others.
