Police have ruled out terrorism or any sabotage after a gas explosion in Wappingers Falls, New York, on Thursday, caused a building to collapse, injuring as many as 15 people.

According to a CNN report, the injured comprised five first responders, eight adults, and two children.

During a news conference, Wappingers Falls Police Commissioner Paul Italiano disclosed that the injured first responders included one firefighter and four police officers.

These victims were trapped beneath the rubble of the collapsed building following the explosion, and emergency crews diligently worked to extricate and transport them to hospitals.

As of Thursday evening (local time), all the victims remained hospitalised, as reported by CNN.

Eric Kiszkiel, associated with Central Hudson Gas and Electric, noted that some of the injured individuals sustained critical injuries, primarily burn injuries.

The explosion occurred as a result of a gas line rupture during routine maintenance and was not an act of terrorism or deliberate sabotage.

Wappingers Falls Fire Chief Jason Enson explained that the building that collapsed was a multifamily structure with four adjoining apartments.

Central Hudson Gas and Electric is collaborating with the Red Cross to assist those who have been displaced due to the explosion.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has been briefed on the building collapse and urged the people of New York to follow the guidance of law enforcement and other first responders working diligently to ensure the safety of the community.

"I have been briefed on the building collapse in Dutchess County and have deployed State emergency services personnel to assist in response efforts,"

“As the situation develops, I urge all New Yorkers to follow the direction of law enforcement and other first responders working to keep the community safe. I join all New Yorkers in praying for the Village of Wappingers Falls," she added.
