Social media, internet services reportedly down in parts of Pakistan

  • Netizens complain about inability to connect to social media sites.

KARACHI, ISLAMABAD: Internet services and popular social media apps were hit by outages on Sunday evening as users almost across the country reported connection errors and disruptions.

Netizens complained about their inability to connect to social media sites including X — formerly known as Twitter — Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and streaming giant YouTube.

As per downdetector.pk, Google services as well as internet service provider PTCL also faced disruption around 5pm on Sunday.

A sharp rise in connection outages on YouTube, X and Facebook was seen in downdetector's graphs.

Meanwhile, global internet observatory Net Blocks also confirmed nationwide social media apps' disruptions.

“Confirmed: Live metrics show a nation-scale disruption to social media platforms across #Pakistan, including X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube…,” posted NetBlocks, the internet's observatory, on its official X handle.

The reason behind the outage is yet not clear as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has not issued any statement on the matter till the filing of this report.
