A story that has accumulated thousands of interactions on X, formerly Twitter, claims that the bank accounts of the Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital have been frozen, making it difficult for the hospital staff to treat patients.

The claim is false.

Claim

“Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre is unable to treat cancer patients as Pakistani authorities have frozen its accounts,” wrote an X user on February 14.

The post has been viewed over 85,000 times and reposted nearly 5,000 times, to date.

Fact

None of the bank accounts of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in the country has been frozen to date, confirm the hospital’s administration.

“All of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust’s bank accounts are operating normally,” Hammad Butt, the chief financial officer at the Hospital, told Geo Fact Check via messages, “We have not received any notification from any bank or other regulatory authorities regarding the ‘freezing’ of bank accounts.”

The same was confirmed by Dr Faisal Sultan, the chief executive officer at the Shaukat Khanum Hospital. “The bank accounts are functional,” he said, over the phone, “Claims about them being ‘frozen’ are incorrect.”
