OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed Thursday that he sent a text to Tesla CEO Elon Musk after the electric vehicle manufacturing company sued the company behind artifical intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT, Business Insider reported.

During an interview with tech journalist Kara Swisher onstage at City Arts and Lectures Thursday, Altman said that he sent Musk "something trivial" in the wake of a lawsuit against OpenAI and its cofounders.

"You know what you said," Swisher said, asking Altman if it was something along the lines of "WTF?"

"It was like a little bit nicer than that," Altman said. "I don't remember. You know, the spirit of that."

In response, Altman said the pair "sent some emojis back and forth."

Earlier this year, Musk sued OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming that they had breached their "founding agreement" and violated their non-profit mission.

Musk is now advocating for OpenAI to make its research open-source, remove Microsoft from GPT-4, and prevent Altman and Microsoft from benefiting from the company.

Musk, 52, co-founded the tech startup with Altman, 38, in 2015, but stepped down from the board three years later due to a conflict of interest. He has since criticised Altman and the company and launched his own AI venture last year.

Despite Musk's public criticism, Altman has been more diplomatic in his response to the tech billionaire.

He acknowledged Musk's stress about AI safety but wishes that the Tesla owner would acknowledge OpenAi's efforts to address these concerns.

"I miss the old Elon," Altman told Swisher. "I grew up with him as an absolute hero," the CEO added.

Hoowever, OpenAI's lawyers have criticised Musk's lawsuit as "frivolous" and "incoherent", claiming it stems from jealousy for the company's success after he left.

Earlier this month, the ChatGPT creator also released some emails that appeared to conflict with Musk's public comments about the company.
