Tech giant Google has recently given a rare peek into its unique testing lab that the company uses to perfect the quality of cameras for its Pixel smartphones.

However, this testing lab is unlike any other.

Instead of large calibration charts, industrial machines, and employees in white lab coats, Google's Real World Testing Lab resembles "a cluster of Ikea displays", according to CNET tech experts who visited the site.

This testing lab features a living room set, a tiny cafe with everything except anything edible, and employees sporting retro Jordan sneakers instead of white lab coats.

The lab features a lighting grid with adjustable color temperature and intensity fixtures, giving it a TV studio vibe.

Engineers are able to create various test scenarios from late evening light to sunrise in the cafe using realistic sets and lighting.

"Real people take pictures in places like living rooms and cafes," said Isaac Reynolds, Google's group product manager for Pixel Camera.

Reynolds and his team emphasised that Google's focus is not on scientific ideals, but on both feel and precision, demonstrating that their goal is not just about video quality, CNET reported.

"Just producing the correct image doesn't always mean it's the right one. There's always a difference between how you remember a moment, how you want to remember it, and maybe what the color chart said it was. And there's also a balance to find in there," Reynolds said.
