Diane Warren, an American songwriter, saw the release of her documentary Diane Warren: Relentless on 10 January.

In it she opens up about the traumatic experience of being sexually assaulted when she was a child, “I never talked about that I was molested as a kid. I didn’t tell my mom or dad at the time.… I didn’t tell anybody,” she began.

She decided to channel her pain into creating the song Till It Happens To You and approached a collaborator who would understand her perspective, “When I wrote the song, I thought I'd heard that Gaga had said something on Howard Stern that she was sexually assaulted. And I thought, you know what? I'm going to call her.”

When Warren witnessed the reaction the Judas singer had to the song, she realized she had made the right decision. “I call and I go, ‘I want to play you this song. You're either going to hate me or what.’ I didn't know how she'd react,” she explained.

The songwriter continued, “I had the phone down, and I played her the song, and she was hysterically crying on the other end of the phone when I was done playing it. I flew out to New York and taught her the song. We went over it, and then she came back to L.A. and produced this amazing record.”

Both of the artists have been vocal about their experience with sexual assault in the past as well and Gaga even went on to perform Till It Happens To You at the Oscars.

Diane Warren: Relentless can be watched in theaters and will become available on Masterclass on 16 January.
