King Charles delivered an important speech as he marked the 80th anniversary of the VE Day on Sunday.
However, the monarch’s speech left Prince William and Kate Middleton visibly emotional.
During his speech, King Charles said, "It is now 80 years since my grandfather, King George VI, announced to the nation and the Commonwealth that ‘the dreadful shadow of war has passed from our hearts and our homes’. The liberation of Europe was secured."
He also discussed the importance of remembrance, saying, "Our greatest debt is owed to all those who paid the ultimate price… we should never forget how the war changed the lives of virtually everyone.”
Speaking of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth, Charles said, "The celebration was marked by my own late mother who described in her diary how she mingled anonymously in the crowds across central London and ‘walked for miles.’”
“I do hope your celebrations tonight are almost as joyful, although I rather doubt I shall have the energy to sing until 2am,” he added humorously.
Prince William and Kate Middleton, who joined King Charles at the historic concert in honor of the sacrifices made in the Second World War, looked visibly moved by the monarch’s words.
