Tom Cruise is currently working on fresh ideas for the third instalment of Top Gun.
For the unversed, the 62-year-old American actor and film producer will be seen in the final film in the Mission Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, as Ethan Hunt, on May 21, 2025.
In his recent interview with Australia’s Today, Cruise revealed that he is “working on” a follow-up to his 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick and a sequel to his 1990 NASCAR drama Days of Thunder.
He quipped, “Yeah, we’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.”
The 4x Oscar nominee added, “There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now. I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film.” (sic)
Notably, Cruise first played the role of Captain Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in the original 1986 aviator film, Top Gun, and reprised his role in the 2022 sequel Top Gun: Maverick, which not only amassed $1.4 billion worldwide but also secured an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
Moreover, Cruise went on to share that he has “just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant, and we’ll be coming out with that. That was an extraordinary experience and [Christopher McQuarrie] and I are always working on several different films.”
The untitled Iñárritu film chronicles the tale of the most powerful man in the world, who tries to make himself famous as a humanity savior by embarking on a wild mission ahead of a disaster he caused that destroys everything.
Before concluding, it is pertinent to mention that Iñárritu is expected to be released on October 2, 2026.
