George Wendt has passed away at the age of 76.

The comedian and actor, who was a household name during the 1980s and 90s, died on Tuesday morning at his home, confirmed by his family through a representative.

"George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him," the statement read via Variety.

"He will be missed forever," the publicist said, noting, "The family has requested privacy during this time."

Wendt was known for his beloved role as Norm Peterson on the NBC comedy series, Cheers, ran between 1982 to 1993.

The actor had earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for his beer-drinking character in the popular Boston bar-set sitcom.

After his famous series ended, Wendt starred in a short-lived self-titled sitcom The George Wendt Show in 1995.

The Chicago native, who began his acting career at The Second City comedy theater, also made guest appearances in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Saturday Night Live.

Apart from his TV career Wendt also starred in movies like The Little Rascals, Spice World and more.
