ISLAMABAD: The promotion of General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal is more than a military honour — it is a national tribute to a leader who stood resolute and delivered when Pakistan faced one of the most critical challenges in its history.
His decisive leadership during the recent war with India earned Pakistan unprecedented global respect and honour. According to a cabinet source, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally recommended General Munir’s promotion during a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday.
The proposal, grounded in recognition of his extraordinary leadership, strategic brilliance and unwavering commitment to national defence, was unanimously endorsed by the cabinet, with members thumping their desks in support.
On the night of May 7, India launched an unprovoked and unjustified military attack, seeking to breach Pakistan’s sovereignty. In that dark hour, General Munir led the nation’s defence with unmatched gallantry, clarity, and resolve.
Under his command, the armed forces mounted a swift, harmonised and agile response, effectively neutralising enemy objectives and ensuring defence of Pakistan’s territorial integrity.
The cabinet was informed the nation had passed through an extraordinarily challenging phase, but General Munir’s leadership stood as a pillar of strength and unity.
The cabinet acknowledged that General Munir demonstrated exemplary courage, uniting the three services under a synergized war strategy that led to a historic and honourable success.
His command during the conflict was marked by discipline, coordination and precision, securing a victory that not only preserved national territory but also elevated the morale of the nation.
According to a cabinet source, it was a rare moment in Pakistan’s history — one that demanded the leader who guided the armed forces through it be honoured with an exceptional distinction for his extraordinary contribution.
The source explained army regulations not only allow for the promotion of a four-star general to the rank of Field Marshal but also recognise Field Marshal as the highest attainable rank in the military hierarchy.
