Tom Cruise's next movie after Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning will be quite different.

In a surprising turn for the actor, Cruise will next be seen in a dark comedy, but he’s brought the same level of “wild” to the comedy that he brings to his action flicks.

The film’s director Alejandro G. Iñárritu (Birdman and The Revenant) has teased the film, which is tentatively titled Judy, for its “brutal, wild comedy.”

At the Cannes Film Festival, Alejandro G. Iñárritu told The Hollywood Reporter, “All I can say is it is a brutal, wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It’s insane.”

"It’s scary and funny and beautiful. I know comedy is not what people expect from me, or Tom, and making this film was terrifying for me, but I don’t like to repeat myself, and every film should scare you a little," he continued.

Iñárritu made a name for himself with the 2014 and 2015 movies Birdman and The Revenant. The director Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture at the 87th Oscars for Birdman, and the Best Director Oscar again the next year for The Revenant, which also won Leonardo DiCaprio his first ever Oscar in the Best Actor category.

"I felt Birdman was a comedy, a dark comedy, and this one was challenging like that," the director reflected. "And Tom makes me laugh every single day. He has this total commitment, this total madness.”

Alongside Tom Cruise, Judy also stars Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Emma D’Arcy, Sophie Wilde, Michael Stuhlbarg and John Goodman. The film is set to bow in theaters in fall 2026.
