Shaboozey's star has risen, all thanks to his fun hit A Bar Song. Now, the country singer is opening up about the impact of the song, and how it was made.
The song, which is an interpolation of J-Kwon’s 2004 hit Tipsy, earned the singer multiple Grammy nominations, features on Beyoncé’s country album Cowboy Carter, and gigs at Coachella and Glastonbury. The singer is also about to embark on a tour soon.
Talking about A Bar Song, he told People, “I want to outdo what I did last year. I want to outdo this song. You’ll drive yourself crazy trying to compare or compete, but I want to continue to make music that people know across the world.”’
The song almost didn’t get made because Shaboozey suffered from perfectionism and overthinking.
“I was almost self-sabotaging because everything needed to be very intentional and it all needed to connect and be this grandiose thing,” he recalled.
“And then my manager was just like, ‘Hey, not everything has to be a set piece. Sometimes you’ve got to able to just be you.’ And it’s interesting, A Bar Song is an example of just having fun in the studio," he continued.
One day, the singer had an idea and spontaneously made the hit song.
He said, “I was just like, ‘Man, I’m just driving myself insane overthinking. Let’s just go in and make a fun song. I had this idea for a song today and I’m going to go make it.’”
Referring to A Bar Song and its success, he said, “It’s a testament to just having fun in the studio and not thinking about it too much.”
Since it's such a fan favorite song, Shaboozey knows he will always have to perform it.
“[Sometimes] I’m like, ‘Man, I got to perform that song again.’ And [people will] look at me and be like, ‘You’re going to be performing that song for the rest of your life, and honestly, you should be happy about it,'" Shaboozey shared.
One thing he no longer has to worry about is making a hit song.
Shaboozey said, "So I think the cool thing about that is feeling like I don’t have that pressure anymore of being like, 'I need to make a hit song.'"
