Prince William and Kate Middleton on Tuesday issued a joint statement on the Liverpool incident where over two dozen people were injured when a car ploughed into a crowd of fans during a parade celebrating their side's Premier League soccer title on Monday.
"We are deeply saddened by the scenes in Liverpool yesterday. What should have been joyful celebration ended with tragedy, the couple said.
They said, "Out thoughts are with those who were injured and to the first responders and emergency services on the ground."
Earlier King Charles and Queen Camilla also expressed sympathy with those affected by the incident. The monarch and his wife on Monday left for Canada on a two-day official visit to Canada.
Meanwhile, police said they had arrested a "53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area," whom they believed to be the driver of the vehicle which struck a large group of supporters who were celebrating in the city in northwest England.
