Fact-check: No ban on throwing money at weddings in Punjab

Punjab govt has neither issued any such notification nor announced any such ban, confirmed three government officials

Social media users are claiming that the Punjab government has imposed a complete ban on tossing money at wedding events. Some posts further allege that on violations the groom will be arrested.

The claim is inaccurate.

Claim

On April 13, a Facebook user wrote in the Urdu language: “Throwing currency notes at weddings has been banned in Punjab. Violations will result in the arrest of the groom.”

Fact

The Punjab government has not issued any notification or announced a ban on throwing money at weddings, three senior officials confirmed this to Geo Fact Check.

 Muhammad Sohail Janjua, the director of news at the government-run Directorate General of Public Relations (DGPR) in Lahore, stated over the phone: “The Punjab law department has not issued a notification in this regard.” 

Hafsa Javed, deputy director of electronic media at DGPR, also confirmed that no such directive has been issued. 

While Tauseef Sabih Gondal, spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department, said he had consulted the judicial and internal security wings of his department as well as the police and all denied the existence of any such ban. 

Geo Fact Check also reviewed the websites of the Punjab Assembly and the Punjab Law Department but found no relevant order, notification, directive, or law.

Verdict: No official notification or directive has been issued by the Punjab government banning the act of throwing currency notes at weddings.
