Why iconic broadcaster walked away from BBC show after five years?

Amol Rajan, University Challenge presenter who is best known for his bold aura, announced that he is now stepping away from his role on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme after five years.

The 42-year-old host joined the Today show back in 2021 and slowly built a strong connection with his audience.

Apart from radio success, he continued growing his television career and became the face of University Challenge.

Amol, however, confirmed that he will still host the popular quiz show and also will continue the Radical With Amol Rajan podcast.

The star's sudden decision only marked the end of his daily role on Radio 4.

While explaining his unexpected move, Amol shared: “The pips have sounded, and it’s time to get my coat. Leaving Today might be mad. This team is the best of the best, consistently world class, and exceptionally well led by Owenna Griffiths and Mohit Bakaya.”

"I will always feel like I played in the editorial version of Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, or Steve Waugh’s Australia,” he continued.

The father or four also talked about his interview work, explaining: “I genuinely couldn’t be prouder of Amol Rajan Interviews, which will stand the test of time.

Travelling all around the world or indeed Essex to spend so much time with so many icons has been an unforgettable privilege."

For the unversed, BBC didn’t announce who will be the next host of the Today programme.
